Summary:
I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.
Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.
Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.
My rating: 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4)
Ahhh my thoughts are so conflicted on this one!! On one hand I enjoyed reading but on the other hand the ending and Adelina sometimes just...AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
What liked
- The Writing Style
I just love Marie Lu's writing and there were so many good quotes in this book!
- The Plot
The plot is just soo good!! It’s actually really fun to read, with plot twists, suspense, and a secret
society!
- The worldbuilding
The world-building was just so well done because there were just enough details, without there being too much or too little.
-The Diversity
- Gemma
This requires no explanation except that Gemma is totally awesome!
- How much I hate Teren! (i added this in the what I liked section because I’m pretty sure we were meant to hate him…)
- Maeve! I only read a chapter with her perspective but I already like her!
What I didn’t like
-I don’t ship Adelina and Enzo and I don’t really know why either. I guess they’re okay together and I don’t hate, but I don’t love it either.
- Violetta
I feel like we're supposed to like her, but I just can't! I mean at first I thought she was okay, but then once you find out that SPOILER🚨 {she had powers too and she just let Adelina get hurt like that all those years!}🚨 I just couldn't like her anymore, even though I guess I sort of get her side...
- the scene with Dante- SPOILER🚨{I just hated that scene!! I get that she's supposed to be evil and I didn't even like Dante, but what she did felt so unnecessary! Maybe in the beginning it was self-defense but after that, it was just plain old murder!! Was I the only one who felt kind of sorry for Dante? I mean, sure he was sort of jerky, but he was just trying to look out for the elites and she just straight up killed him!!}🚨
Literally my reaction to that scene:
- I didn't really connect to any of the other characters. They were okay and I liked some of the side characters, but I feel like some of them could have been better. Mostly, here I'm talking about Enzo and Raffael but also some of the others because I felt like I didn't really know them.
And I need a whole other category for THE ENDING...which just….I don’t even know what to say!! So I’ll use gifs instead.
Me to Adelina:
Also Me:
Me to Me:
Me: I DON'T KNOW!!!
So yeah...those were all my thoughts. Though I did have some things that I didn't like, I'm still planning to read the next book and find out what happens to Adelina.
