Summary:
Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming ― mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.
Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.
All’s fair in love and cheese ― that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life ― on an anonymous chat app Jack built.
As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate ― people on the internet are shipping them?? ― their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.
A fresh, irresistible rom-com from debut author Emma Lord about the chances we take, the paths life can lead us on, and how love can be found in the opposite place you expected.
My Rating:
I just looked back at this book and realized I never wrote a review of it, even though I loved it and read it twice, and thought it was soo cute!
When I picked it up, I did not expect to like it this much. I was just like "enemies to lovers, food and Twitter wars? Sounds interesting." and then I start reading it and just couldn't stop!!
I liked both Pepper and Jack for how real they were, not just realistic, but real. They each had their own struggles and flaws, which were really well developed. And can I just say, "PEPPERJACK!!!" They were just sooo cute together and I loved reading their Twitter rivalry and their moments together in real life 💖
The side characters of Paul and Pooja as well as Pepper's sister added to the book and were fun to read as well. And now for the side character, who may not have been a big part of the book but I still feel the need to mention...Jack's Grandmother!! She's such a cool character! He kind of assumes that she has no idea what's going on and meanwhile she's known about the whole thing and gave really great advice too!
The problems that the characters dealt with, such as Pepper's struggles with wanting to do good in school while also bake and trying to get her mother and sisters to stop fighting were shown well. Jack also had his own problems such as feeling like the lesser brother and being there for the store well also hiding his app-making skills. Both the main characters and some side character also dealt with the pressure of living up to expectations. All of these issues were shown realistically in the way that they affected their characters as well as how they resolved these conflicts by talking to their respective parents as well as working to improve. Also these characters actually have homework! When I saw that I was just like "YASSSS finally some characters in YA books who have homework." because most times it seems like they go to school but don't have any homework.
I also just loved the plot in this....wait did I say that right? Plot! In a contemporary! Lol, I have nothing against contemporaries, but out of the ones I've read, they don't usually have this much of an entertaining or suspenseful plot. The Twitter War got higher stakes as the book went on, especially as Pepper's and Jack's real lives got more involved. It wasn't necessarily super suspenseful, but it was definitely entraining to see where things were going and how each of them would respond to whatever happened next.
Wait...there's something I didn't mention but should totally mention...THE FOOD!! I need Monster Cake in my life and Kitchen Sink Macarons and all those delicious-sounding foods!
Also as a quick note, I listened to this book as an audiobook and the narrators both did a great job in portraying the characters which made it even more enjoyable!
I shall end this review with a truly relatable quote:
“Um, is the apartment on fire?”
“Nope,” I mutter, crossing the kitchen to shut the oven off, “just my life.”
