I'm not sure if I'm going to read this. I feel like I should since I already put the effort to read all the others but...I don't really know... If this is the last one then maybe I'll read it just for the satisfaction.
So before I say anything else I should probably say that this isn't actually a review, it's more like a debate with myself about whether or not I should read this.
I forgot basically everything that happened in all the other books cause this series is sooooo long and I kind of have mixed feelings on this. I rated all the past books based solely on enjoyment but there are also a lot of problems with these books that I should have taken into account earlier.
First is the bad stuff:
1. Sophie is TOO PERFECT. She's super smart, has a photographic memory, has blond hair while the rest of her family has brown hair and complains about it, has about a bajillion powers(honestly I can't even keep track of them all anymore), has three guys who are all HOPELESSLY IN LOVE with her, is sort of weird but in a quirky way which makes everyone like her, and is told about 100,0000 times how so very special she is.
2. So much of the plot is like Harry Potter. Here are all the ways:
-The Chosen One trope
- school for magic
-The Neverseen=The Death Eaters
-The Black Swan=The Order of the Phoenix
- the evil people have tattoos(just like Death Eaters)
-neither of the MCs knew their parents but were then told by old guys (Dumbledore and Forky) what they were like
-Sophie has a smart friend(Dex) and Harry has (Hermione)
-Sophie gets hurt in every other chapter and has to go to the healing canter (also just like Hary)
-Sophie is bad at Alchemy like Harry is bad at Potions
-Councillor Bronte= Professor Snape (he despises Sophie and also trains her in Inflicting like
Snape trains Harry in Occlumency)
-Stina is basically like Malfoy. She's mean but also kind of "nice"
I guess I'm a bit mixed on this too, since though there are so many similarities they're still unique in their own ways.
3. THE GENDER STEREOTYPES!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, this is one that I'm not mixed about at all. There are just soo many instances where they had those. And also Sophie being "not like other girls". Both of these things were really annoying and unfortunately, I really didn't notice this on my first read. Like this: “Wow, most girls would be crying about a wound like that.” and also THIS: “Makeovers?” Keefe scoffed behind them. “You girls sure know how to have fun. Maybe you can braid each other’s hair and giggle about boys while you’re at it.” AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it makes me want to scream and I didn't even notice this somehow!! And there are soo many others, but just these too serve the point pretty well.
Ok now for the good stuff:
-The characters: By characters, I really only mean Keefe and Ro. The others were okay but I didn't particularly like any of them.
-The house descriptions. This is one is kind of weird and random but I really liked the house descriptions...they were just so magical and heavenly and HUGE and I wanted to live there right away.
-Silveny(and also the entire Unicorn family) cause they were cute and I don't think there needs to be any other reason for me to like them 😂
-It was enjoyable.
This was really the main reason that I rated the books with high stars, because they were just fun to read and I kind of just ignored all the small things that bothered me along the way.
So yeah there's my debate about whether or not to read this. I'm still not sure if I will but if this is going to be the last one I may give it a try because it would just be satisfying to finish. And also I want to know what happens to Keefe!
