Summary: Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish: to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she'll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be. She is a young woman in eighteenth-century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her. She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age—her tyrannical father has made that much clear.
As Nannerl's hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true—but his help may cost her everything.
In her first work of historical fiction, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu spins a lush, lyrically told story of music, magic, and the unbreakable bond between a brother and sister.
My Review: Before I say anything else, I just have to say, this cover is so beautiful!!
The whole novel was written so well, the descriptions of the Kingdom and the music was so atmospheric that it was like truly being there. Marie Lu's words were enchanting and poetic at the same time in a way that was completely stunning. Every part of the kingdom and Hycanth, the mysterious princeling was strange and mesmerizing, while still giving the readers parts of Nannerl's life in the real world. The relationship between Nanneral and Wolfart was nice as well, and it added a nice element to the story.
But the part the won me over was probably the story it was telling. Almost everyone knows Mozart, but I didn't even know that his sister existed or that she was also a musician! It really is crazy how someone is completely forgotten in history like that, and this story brought another aspect of the Mozart family to light.
Overall, it was a really delightful read that I would recommend to anyone who likes fantasy and historical fiction.
