Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry

Summary:

Quinn keeps lists of everything—from the days she’s ugly cried, to “Things That I Would Never Admit Out Loud,” to all the boys she’d like to kiss. Her lists keep her sane. By writing her fears on paper, she never has to face them in real life. That is, until her journal goes missing…

An anonymous account posts one of her lists on Instagram for the whole school to see and blackmails her into facing seven of her greatest fears, or else her entire journal will go public. Quinn doesn’t know who to trust. Desperate, she teams up with Carter Bennett—the last known person to have her journal—in a race against time to track down the blackmailer.

Together, they journey through everything Quinn’s been too afraid to face, and along the way, Quinn finds the courage to be honest, to live in the moment, and to fall in love.

My rating:

This was just the type of contemporary I was looking for! It was soo fun to read and really cute, but also dealt with important issues like racism, cyberbullying, and stereotypes.

Characters

Quinn: The main reason I liked Quinn was that reading about her from her perspective and through her lists made it really easy for me to connect to her character and feel like I knew her. Her character change made me like both her and the book even more because it was so well-written and you could clearly see that she had changed. Also, she was soo relatable even though I don't have a journal of lists like her.

Carter: I didn't really Carter at the start of the book because of how he acted towards Quinn, but a few chapters in I was like "Never mind I like him!" cause he just cared so much about Quinn, and was funny and sweet and just really fun to read about.

Olivia: YASSSS Olivia!! She's my absolute favorite character in this book! She's such a great friend and she's just super fierce and brave and just altogether amazing!

Auden: I liked Auden too, but I don't have as much stuff to say about him. He seemed really understanding a nice, but I didn't get enough into his character to say much more.

Matt: He seemed interesting, but I don't have much to say because he just basically DISAPPEARED from the book by the second half. He seemed really important because he was Quinn's best friend and all but he was barely present after the trampoline scene.

Hattie: Hattie wasn't a huge character in this book, but just from the few scenes she was present in I already liked her! She seemed so wise and strong but also comforting and I really liked reading about Quinn's relationship with her grandmother because of that.

Imani: I know she's also a pretty minor character, but I just had to talk about her because she's just soo cuteee!

Plot

Most contemporaries I read aren't as focused on the plot or as suspenseful because they're pretty predictable, but this actually kept me on the edge of my seat because I wanted to know who the blackmailer was and what would Quinn have to do next.

Writing

The writing was so entertaining and I really liked the writing style for how fitting it was to Quinn's character.

This was really fun contemporary and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes this genre!
