Summary:
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...
Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.
My rating:
I've been thinking about reading this book for a looong time and now I've finally read it! Yayyyy! And though I didn't really like it, I definitely don't regret reading it because it wasn't all bad.
Now...on to the review!
My expectations
I tried to go into this with little to no expectations since I know the hype can fool me, but I still had a few.
Considering this was a retelling of Beuty and the Beast, I was expecting them to slowly fall in love because of what’s inside not outside, but instead, it seemed like Feyre liked Tamlin just because he was sooo handsome. And he wasn’t even supposed to look good! He’s supposed to be an ugly scary beast, but the description didn’t show that.
I mean just look at this!
Beauty and Beast has meaning to it because of the way the Beast looked. He wasn’t just a good-looking guy with a mask, on, no he was a full-on beast and Belle and in fell in love with him despite this. This is because there was a real connection between them, something that went deeper than just skin-deep.
The Plot
I was semi-bored for most of the first half of the book since things did happen, but most of it was just Feyre making stupid mistakes, people getting hurt, and some romance between Tamlin and Feyre. But later on, it does speed up, so I guess it wasn't too bad.
The Characters
Feyre: She’s a pretty typical and average YA character, but I have to admit I did like her fierceness at some points and how she cared for her family. But that’s pretty much where it ends. I might have, maybe, possibly, liked her if weren’t for how STUPID she was!! Whenever the others tell her not to do something and explain why it’s dangerous, she’s like oh I’m such a rebel and now I shall do exactly what you told me not to do for NO GOOD REASON!
Tamlin: Tamlin was okay, I didn’t love him or hate him, he was just there. Honestly though I'm leaning more towards the dislike side because he was so hot and cold. As in, he sometimes was sweet and caring, and other times he was just obsessive or distant.
【And also, as a quick note, yes I’m aware of what happens with him in the next book, cause I accidentally spoiled myself from other reviews. Oops! I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I don't know all the details, so I guess it's fine.】
Lucien:
Lucien went rigid, but he hopped off the edge of the table and bowed deeply to me. ”My apologies, lady.” Another joke at my expense. “I’m Lucien. Courtier and emissary.” He gestured to me with a flourish. “Your eyes are like stars, and your hair like burnished gold.”
Yay Lucien!!! Finally, a character who I don’t have mixed feelings about! He was a true friend for both Feyre and Tamlin and he was so brave when he stood up to Amarantha! Also his dialogue was just the best! I was bored at a lot of points but Lucien made up for that!
Rhysand:
I do not like him. He’s definitely my least favorite character in this book because of the way acted in the mountains scenes. Maybe he'll make up for it in the next book, but based on what I read in this book, I am not for him! I don’t want to spoil too much though, so I’ll leave it at that.
Amarantha
I liked her as a villain when she was introduced because of the depth her backstory gave her, but after the riddle scene, I don’t really feel the same way. I mostly just wanted to know, why even give the option of a riddle?? And seriously the answer was 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨???!! I still think she's a pretty good villain, but she could have been better.
The Worldbuilding
The worldbuilding was fairly good because the concept of the different courts was really interesting, but it would have been cool to see it explored some more. I’m guessing this will be further explained in the next book, though, so I can’t really judge.
The Writing: The writing was nice in some scenes, but most of the time, it felt just regular and nothing really stood out to me.
So this book wasn’t really for me, but I can see why people would like it. Though I didn't really like this first one I'm planning to give the second book a chance and see if it gets any better!
